July 26, 2006 - New York Times reports that the rate of existing-home
sales dropped from 6.7 million in May down to 6.6 million
in June, and down from 7.3 million from a year earlier. The
number of existing units on the market increased so that
it would now take 6.8 months to for the stock of homes to
be bought at the June selling rate, which is up from 6.4
months in May. This provides added indication that it is
becoming a buyer's market. Home sellers are offering increased
incentives, something that was rare a year ago. Meanwhile,
the national median price increased only 1 percent in June
over the year before, which was the smallest increase in
more than 11 years. The article cites Washington, DC
as one of the cities in which developers are abandoning condo
projects because sales are not meeting expectations.
