Why the red lights on Metro platforms?

These lamps, each containing 34 LED bulbs, save energy compared to the old bulbs and last far longer (10 to 12 years). We thought it was just decoration for the Chinatown Metro, but turns out they are being installed across the Metro system.

Burglaries are up 21 percent in the District

in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same period last year. Most are occuring during the day and frequently involve brazen break-ins. Criminals are targeting computers, flat-screen TVs, and iPods. On the bright side, homicides are down by 11 percent.
