Bohemian Caverns on U Street

Bohemian Caverns

2001 Eleventh Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001
202-299-0800

Bohemian Caverns has a classic atmosphere: dark wood walls, large chandeliers hung down from the ceiling, tables covered with white tablecloths, and windows dressed in burgundy curtains. It feels as though the jazz golden age was built in such a place and indeed, Bohemian Caverns does have a solid history.

Every item on the menu is named after a jazz legend, which I find charming. The menu is extensive and the bar offers full cocktails and specializes in Belgian beers. The staff at the restaurant is very attentive and friendly. It is a little sad though the food is not as good as the rest of the restaurant. The food offered is basic and over-priced for what you get. I would return for the drinks though.

Downstairs, there is the cavern. It is literally a cave-looking space and most seats are wooden stools, which look like the ones from the Flintstone's. Again, the service is great here. Although it can be uncomfortable to sit on the stools for a long session, it is a great place to enjoy music. (04/23/04)
