Dupont Circle South / Farragut North
1725 DeSales Street NW
(Off Connecticut Avenue)
202-293-7760
If you are looking for a great-looking tapas restaurant in the
Dupont Circle area, Panache is the place. Compared to the very
popular Jaleo downtown, the décor at Panache is trendier with darker
lighting and warm colored fabrics. And unlike Jaleo, there are
no flamenco dancers with castanets in colorful dresses. The first
thing you notice entering the restaurant is the noise. With the
unnecessarily loud background music (which doesn’t stay in the
background), diners need to shout to communicate with one another
during crowded hours.
If you are lucky, get a table outside – the
noise level is much more manageable. Though DeSales Street is close
to Connecticut Avenue, it is a small street and perfect for sitting
on the sidewalk to enjoy glasses of wine or house-made sangria
(which is on the sweeter side) on a lovely evening.
Tapas at Panache is priced between about $6 to $10 each, and dinner
would be about $30 - $40 per person with drinks. Each tapas plate
is served with a welcome attention to details in the presentation.
Though there are not many Entrée menu items, and I admit that we
did not try any of them, the tapas alone is very enjoyable for
dinner with friends.
One more note: For dessert, the cheesecake with strawberries delightful – simple,
but not too sweet. (September 2004)
