Prime Rib Steakhouse, DC

K Street
2020 K Street, NW (Between 20th and 21st Street)
202-466-8811

The Prime Rib is everything that a high-end steakhouse should be – dark wood-paneled walls, service staff in tuxedos, large portions of meat, classic side dishes, and cigar smoking permitted at the bar. When you walk into the restaurant, you see the bar on your left filled with important-looking people scanning you, looking for people who may be more powerful than they are. The atmosphere is lively – the crowd is generally of an age commensurate with a high degree of accomplishment.

All the chairs at the Prime Rib are upholstered in black leather – very comfortable, indeed. As you would expect, the service is excellent. The waiters are polite, attentive, and helpful. A martini would be an appropriate start to a superb dining experience. They serve delicious bread, but no matter how hungry you may be, leave enough room for the main course.

The appetizer menu is varied. There are several salads as well as classic dishes such as shrimp cocktail and crab cakes. The lobster bisque I had was rich and flavorful, with large chunks of lobster. The clams casino were delicious – while it is hard to go wrong with clam, garlic breadcrumbs, and bacon, their rendition was excellent.

For the main course, their prime rib, the signature dish, was so large that it took us a while to adjust our eyes. My husband likened it to the brontosaurus steak that Fred gets served at the start of The Flintstones. Both the roast prime rib and prime rib steak were prepared to perfection. Every bite was a joy. The menu also offers extensive seafood dishes. The crab imperial was amazing. The portion of this dish may seem to be modest at first, compared to the steak, but do not be fooled. It is very rich and delicious!

If you have more room for dessert, Prime Rib offers apple pie, various chocolate cakes, and seasonal fruits.

We definitely look forward to returning. (05/15/04)
